Well I see more and more people starting to create their own websites/blogs and so I thought that since I write a blog about making money online, I may as well share some information in the form of a guide to help you with your websites. Enjoy.
Backlinks are pretty simply put, a link to your site from another site. Backlinks help you in countless ways either directly or indirectly from the link being placed on your site. There is the obvious traffic that can click on it, and then there are things like Google Page Rank, Technorati Authority that are effected by this. Google Page Rank can do a few things. One it will help you get preference in keywords over pages without keywords. This will improve your rankings on keywords that are highly searched for and will bring more traffic. Then there is technorati which has an authority count. These is simply the number of sites that link to your page. Both of these factors help determine whether or not people would like to buy advertising space on your site, but for most of you guys, all you are interested in are referrals, so it will help you bring more visitors to your site.
Backlinks don't happen simply by sitting around and waiting long enough. In fact my blogs been sitting for 2 or 3 months will only 7 backlinks as I've not focused my time in trying to receive backlinks. For the most part, until your blog starts up you will really need to go out and get these links.
Post your websites link on forums, websites, comments, youtube, where ever you can find a place to add them, do it. Now, Google Page Rank is largely to do with the backlinks and you actually need quite a few links to get higher page rank among other things. Backlinks are just the starting block that will help your blog or website take care of itself.
Another thing to keep in mind when making links is the anchor text. Like a blog about rewards1.com might use the anchor text free stuff (www.rewards1.com). This will help you all around, but also help tell Google and other sites your stuff is about free stuff and will thus help you in all sorts of categories that you wouldn't imagine.
I'm not guaranteeing results instantly, or even at all. I'm simply saying that these will greatly increase your traffic if you do things like post quality content often and a few other things.
